The Becker youth wrestling team placed fifth in the NYWA Region tournament last weekend at Waconia High School.
The young men beat Buffalo, Howard Lake-Waverly, Watertown Mayer and Princeton to advance. Teams placing ahead of them included Waconia, Annandale-Maple Lake, Big Lake and St. Michael-Albertville.
The team is coached by Curt Suchy and Jayme Doucette.
Team members include Mason Lumley, Jacob Williams, Bennett Kujawa, Carl Oakes, Boston Kuschel, Isaac Daluge, Landon Kujawa, Kaden Nicolas, Cash Stortz, Owen Angell, Kaden Rish, Drew May, Ethan Anderson, Mason Doucette, Tyson Ricker, Dylan Weber, Bryce Kuschel, Logan Dierkes, Lane Lysdal and Lance Lysdal.
Several wrestlers also advanced individually to the NYWA State tournament in Rochester, April 1-3. Wrestlers needed to be in the top three of their bracket to advance.
Kindergartner Jacob Williams placed third in the 45-lb. kindergarten bracket. Blayne Kuschel placed second in the 55-lb. kindergarten bracket.
First grader Bennett Kujawa placed second in the 50-lb., first-second grade bracket. Third grader Kaden Nicolas placed first in the 60-lb., third-fourth grade bracket. Third grader Cash Stortz took second in the 64-lb., third-fourth grade bracket. Fourth grader Kaden Rish also won his 72-lb. third-fourth grade bracket.
Sixth grader Mason Doucette took second in his 84-lb., fifth-sixth grade bracket. Sixth grader Bryce Kuschel took third in his 115-lb., fifth-sixth grade bracket. Sixth grader Lane Lysdal placed second in his 215-lb., fifth-sixth grade bracket.
Seventh grader Lukas Paulson placed first in his 105-lb., seventh-eighth grade bracket. Eighth grader John Stangler placed second in his 130-lb., seventh-eighth grade bracket.
Not advancing but still placing at regions were third-grader Landon Kujawa (fourth place at 60-lbs., third-fourth grade bracket); third grader Lance Lysdal (fifth place at 155-lbs., third-fourth grade bracket); seventh grader Kylen Rish (fifth place at 110-lbs., seventh-eighth grade bracket) and seventh grader Brayden Weber (fifth place at 160-lbs., seventh-eighth grade bracket).
