BL lady wrestlers shine at sections

Three Hornet girls competed in the Section 6 Wrestling Tournament at Shakopee on Friday and Saturday, and all three finished in the top five in their weight class.

Ninth-grader Alexa Guy took the title in the 130-pound weight class and is the first Big Lake girl ever to qualify for state.

“She didn’t get scored on once on her way to the championship,” said Coach Justin Nelson.

Guy opened by pinning Brielle Flan of LPGE-Browerville at 0:38 and followed with a pin of Jasmine Ulrich of West Central Area-Ashby at 0:39. It took her 1:58 to beat Peyton Walberg of Annandale-Maple Lake by tech fall, 15-0. She did the same in the title match, beating Jasmine Tukhlynovych of Shakopee by tech fall, 15-0 at 4:46.

Seventh-grader Cora Rand finished fourth at 124 pounds. She pinned Autumn Becker of Bertha-Hewitt-Verndale at 3:07 in her first match. She followed with a pin of Nyasho Valhmu of Eden Prairie at 3:30 before falling to Charli Snyder of Wadena-Deer Creek at 1:23. She came back to beat Olivia Gardas of Zimmerman, 10-3 before falling to Fayth Lindahl of Spectrum at 1:03 in her final match.

Seventh-grader Gracyn Mayer took fifth place at 136 pounds. She opened by pinning Ellie Halonen of LPGE-Browerville at 0:40 before falling to Kayetana Lopez-Moen of Ottertail Central at 2:50. She pinned Caroline Hanson of Waconia at 0:34, then pinned Makya Oehrlein of New York Mills at 4:42. She lost by pin to Addison Hillukka of Wadena-Deer Creek at 0:40, then won by medical forfeit over Lopez-Moen in her final match.

The varsity boys had a busy week with matches against five other schools, winning two and losing three.

The final team score were:

Big Lake 35 - Hutchinson 29; Rocori 66 - Big Lake 10; Princeton 52 - Big Lake 22; Holdingford 52 - Big Lake 23; Big Lake 42 - Sauk Rapids 32.
