Volleyball Team Improves To 11 2 With 3 Big Wins

The Becker Bulldog girls volleyball team kept up their strong showing in the 2015 season with three more wins this week to improve to 11-2.

Becker 3, Zimmerman 0

Thursday night at home, Becker came out strong and dominated the court.

“We really worked our front row and moved the ball around,” said Head Coach Kristina Sloan. “Once again our backrow performed giving us great passes to really set things up and terminate the ball in the front.”

Daisy Kent had 18 set assists, two aces and six digs while Brinley Zoller tallied 16 set assists, one ace and three digs.

Becker beat the Thunder in the first game, 25-15, then battled in the second to win by three, 25-22 before closing out the visitors with a 25-21 win in the third.

“The girls are having fun out there and that’s what truly makes this team great,” said Sloan. “It’s been a great first half of the season.”

Samantha Angell finished with four kills in 19 attempts; Kalie Jergens had 16 kills in 31 attempts; Kalley Anderson had eight  kills  in 14 attempts; Brynn Barthel tallied seven kills in 18 attempts and Hope Amundson had one kill in five  attempts.

On defense, Alexa Hanowski  notched 26 digs; Carly Baumgartner had 18 digs; Angell had 13 digs,  five blocks and five aces; Jergens had nine digs, three blocks and two aces; Barthel had 12 blocks and Anderson had 11 blocks.

Becker 3,  Big Lake 2

Tuesday, the Bulldogs traveled to Big Lake and after the first two games, found themselves in quite a predicament.

“Like most games this season, we came back and won the match,” said Sloan. “I am starting to think they like the fight.”

Becker lost the first match 19-25 and the second 25-20 and were staring down only their third loss of the year. But Sloan’s team proved they have tons of character and it all began with their third set win at 25-18.

They duplicated that score in the fourth match, then closed out the Hornets with a 15-11 victory in match #5.

“Hanowski and Baumgartner put up a strong defense, hustling for every ball,” said Sloan.

Kent finished the night with 24 set assists and four aces; Zoller had 21 assists and three aces; Amundson had two kills and two blocks; Jessica Gruber had two kills and two blocks; Anderson recorded eight kills and seven blocks; Barthel had six kills and seven blocks; Angell registered 13 kills, two blocks and five aces; Jergens had 13 kills, one block and seven aces.

Sloan was especially pleased with the defense as Hanowski figured in 18 digs, Baumgartner had eight digs, Angell 19 and Jergens 14.

Becker 3, Princeton 2

Becker held off a late comeback by Princeton on the road to take the nonconference game Monday night.

The Tigers put up a scrappy defense — digging attack after attack — but the Becker offense played a smart game, creating and exploiting weaknesses in the Tiger defense.  Coach Sloan had her defense set a strong block against the Tigers’ outside hitters with Anderson and Barthel consistently putting up blocks.

Becker’s outside hitters — Angell and  Jergens — had to work hard but managed to lead the team in kills.

“Once again, I’m impressed by this team’s ability to fight to the end,” said Sloan.

Game scores were 25-21, 25-22, 23-25, 24-26, 15-11.

Kent had 31 assists and two aces; Zoller had 34 assists with two aces; Angell captured 18 kills in 36 attempts, had 17 digs, two blocks and four aces; Jergens tallied 20 kills in 33 attempts and had nine digs, two blocks and two aces; Anderson had 10 kills in 25 attempts and nine blocked shots.

Barthel ended up with 11 kills in 20 attempts and nine blocks; Amundson had six kills in 11 attempts; Gruber had two kills in 13 attempts; Hanowski had 25 digs and Baumgartner had 11 digs.
