Benton County 4-H celebrates tradition with Annual Pie Day 2025

The Benton County 4-H program celebrated a long-standing tradition on July 17  with its annual Pie Day event, where youth, parents, and grandparents gather to create homemade pies from scratch. This beloved event took place in the 4-H lunchstand, just before the Benton County Fair, and is a highlight for all involved.

For generations, Benton County 4-H members have come together in the lunchstand to roll out pie crusts, mix delicious fillings, and bake a variety of mouth-watering pies—all made entirely by hand. The event not only encourages family involvement but also fosters a sense of community, with generations of 4-H members learning traditional baking techniques from their parents and grandparents. Community businesses even get involved with the Durch Maid Bakery in Sauk Rapids donated one hundred readymade crusts that just need to be rolled out, 140 pie tins and pie filling including blueberry and cherry.

“The best part about Pie Day is the opportunity to spend time with family and friends while learning how to make pies from scratch,” said Amy Klosowski, a Benton County 4-H volunteer with Langola Livewires 4-H Club. “It’s a special way to bring people of all ages together to create something delicious for the fair.”

From rolling the crusts to mixing fillings, young and seasoned bakers work side by side, ensuring every detail is perfect. The pies are then baked and prepared for sale during the Benton County Fair July 29-Aug 3rd, where they become a much-anticipated treat for fairgoers.

“It’s always exciting to see the final product after all the hard work,” said Abri Lyon from Clear Lake, a 4-H member of Mayhew Lakers 4-H Club,  who’s been involved in the event for several years. “I love knowing that our pies will be enjoyed by so many people during the fair.”

Whether it’s a classic apple pie, a tangy rhubarb, cherry or blueberry, the pies are made with love, care, and a dash of 4-H pride. They also serve as a fundraiser, with all proceeds going toward supporting 4-H programs and activities throughout the year.

During the pie day event, the group made 155 pies that are ready for the fairgoers in the 4-H Lunchstand,

As the Benton County Fair opens its doors to the public, visitors can be sure to find a slice of tradition and a taste of home in every piece of pie sold at the 4-H lunchstand.
