BOSOM BUDDIES. Former student Nancy (Stang) James is pictured with her favorite teacher, Elaine Rupp. Nancy graduated from Becker schools in 1983 and has built a lifelong friendship with Elaine Rupp, including making regular visits to Elaine’s house. The gals treasure every visit and love spending time together. Nancy shared, “We laugh for hours! Elaine’s laugh is precious. She means the world to me!” (Submitted Photos).

Longtime Becker teacher celebrates 100 years!

Elaine Rupp was born July 29, 1924 in Eveleth, MN to Antoinette and Fred Toti. She married Francis Rupp in 1946 and they were married 69 years until death separated them when Francis passed away in 2015. Elaine and Francis had four children — Greg, Fred, Jeff and Jodee (deceased).

Teaching Start

Elaine Rupp started teaching school in Becker in 1948. Most of this reporter’s siblings, including herself, had Elaine as a teacher at Becker schools.

Prior to teaching in Becker, Elaine taught in St. Cloud for one year and her contract was not renewed because she got married. She then taught in Clear Lake briefly. This reporter’s mother - Elaine (Gilyard) Erickson - had Rupp as an English teacher in 1946 in Clear Lake. Nehring’s mom shared that Elaine Rupp was a newlywed when she had her as a teacher and because Elaine loved talking about her husband Francis, the students tried to get her talking about him.

Becker graduate Mary Kay Johnson Spangler shared these sentiments about Elaine Rupp.

“I have many fond memories of Mrs. Rupp and all the practicing we did for the Christmas and spring chorus concerts,” she said. “We were all shouting ‘Hallelujah’ after singing the Hallelujah Chorus one year. I played the piano for the chorus from 1967-1970.”

Johnson also extends her birthday wishes to Elaine on celebrating 100 years.

Retirement

Elaine Rupp retired from teaching in 1986. During her years at Becker schools, she taught English, music and art. Rupp started the choir program at Becker schools in 1949.

Elaine Rupp had this to say about all of her decades spent teaching.

“I have always had such a love for teaching,” she said. “I never expected more from a student than they could give. Their character was within them…not for anyone else to judge. I loved them all deeply and honestly. After all these years, I still hear from my wonderful students/friends. I love them all.”
