SOPHOMORE DIVER EMI QUILL advanced to state last weekend after becoming the Section 5A state diving champion.

Quill Makes State In Diving Competition

The Bulldog girls swimming and diving team hosted the Section 5A playoffs Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Becker’s Emi Quill emerged as the section champion in diving and will compete at state this weekend at the U of M Aquatic Center.
 
Thursday Swimming Prelims
Head Coach Tina Tamm said her girls had great swims Thursday and dropped their overall time by 64 minutes.  
 
“Everyone that swam tonight dropped time and came away with personal best times,” she said.
 
The 200M medley relay team of Vanessa Gilles, Avery Tamm, Emily Lipinski and Melody Swanson  dropped 13.26 seconds (all four girls improved their split times for personal best times).
 
Gilles dropped 6.12 seconds on her 200M freestyle race and 1.81 seconds on her 100M backstroke.
 
Jalissa Johnson dropped 4.15 seconds on her 200M freestyle event and 12.79 seconds on her 500M freestyle.
 
Nicole Larrison dropped .83 seconds on her 50M freestyle and 1.54 seconds on her 100M freestyle events.
 
Macy Erson dropped .84 seconds on her 50M freestyle and 1.10 seconds on her 100M freestyle events.
 
Hailey Erickson dropped .32 seconds on her 50M freestyle and .92 seconds on her 100M freestyle events.
 
Swanson dropped 1.25 seconds on her 100M butterfly.
 
Piper Romfo dropped 1.95 seconds on her 100M butterfly.
 
Allison Sanderson dropped .79 seconds on her 500M freestyle event.
 
Becker’s 200M free style relay team of Macy Erson, Hailey Eriksson, Emily Lipinski and Nicole Larrison dropped .38 seconds.
 
Makenna Thelen dropped .78 seconds on her 100M backstroke.
 
Kamryn Gass dropped .51 seconds on her 100M backstroke.
 
Avery Tamm dropped 1.48 seconds on her 100M breaststroke.
 
Alana Berger dropped 1.84 seconds on her 100M breaststroke.
 
The Becker 400M freestyle relay team of   Macy Erson, Hailey Eriksson, Vanessa Gilles and Nicole Larrison dropped 11.05 seconds (all four girls improved their split times for personal best times).
 
“Maddie Thorn and Sophie Diaz also swam very well,” said Tamm. “They maintained their entry time which still shows a solid race.”  
 
Friday Diving Prelims 
Quill led the way in prelims after eight rounds of diving Friday.
 
Sarah Woelfel was in 14th place after the prelims.
 
Paige Mohs was in 15th place after the eight rounds.
 
“All three divers qualified for the final three rounds Saturday.
 
Saturday’s Swim and Dive Finals
Saturday, Quill’s expertise earned her the Section 5A championship. Quill is just a sophmore.
 
Quill was leading the pack after each round of cuts.  Going in to the final three dives, she only had an eight point lead but her final three dives were strong.  She finished 21.5 points ahead of second place finisher (Belle Albers from Foley). 
 
Woelfel finished 14th and Mohs 16th.  
 
“They both made final cut on their first year of diving as seventh (Woelfel) and eighth graders (Mohs),” said Tamm.  “We have young divers and look forward to the upcoming years with all of them.”
 
Becker swimmers who made it to the finals continued to drop time.
 
In the 200M medley relay, the team of Vanessa Gilles, Avery Tamm, Emily Lipinski and Melody Swanson  dropped another 1.89 seconds, giving the foursome another personal best for the season and a ninth place finish. 
 
Larrison dropped .2 seconds in her 50M freestyle with a fifth place finish and .98 seconds on her 100M freestyle, leaving her just short of a state run, coming in third place.
 
Erson dropped .1 seconds on her 100M freestyle, putting her in 12th place.
 
Johnson maintained her prelim time (after a 12 second drop Thursday) to give her a 14th place finish.
 
Becker’s 200M freestyle relay team of  Macy Erson, Hailey Eriksson, Emily Lipinski and Nicole Larrison dropped 1.91 more seconds, also giving them new personal bests and a sixth place finish. 
 
The 400M freestyle relay team of Macy Erson, Hailey Eriksson, Vanessa Gilles and Nicole Larrison finished in seventh place.
