SOPHOMORE EMI QUILL had an outstanding state meet where she finished in 15th place.

Quill, A Sophomore, Finishes 15th At State

The state swimming and diving tournament was held at the University of Minnesota Aquatic center, Wednesday through Friday with Becker’s amazing sophomore diver, Emi Quill competing.

Quill dove in the preliminaries and semi-finals Wednesday afternoon.  All the divers come into the meet with a score of “zero”  — unlike swimming where they come in with a seed time and are placed in the meet according to that time.

Quill completed her first five dives in the preliminary round, which put her in 19th place, good enough to get her to the semifinal round (top 20 move on).

Quill’s next three dives moved her up even more in the rankings to put her in 13th place after the semifinal round, securing her a spot in the final round (top 16 move on).

“She dove very well for her first time at the state tournament,” said Head Coach Tina Tamm.  “She was in a mix of girls — many of whom had been there before — and you could see a little bit  of the nervousness showing.”

Even with the nerves, Quill still made it to the final round.

Emi polished off her final three dives Friday afternoon.  Again, she executed her dives well, but lost a couple spots in the end, putting her in 15th spot at the end of the meet.

“A very successful season and a great way to end and show how her hard work and dedication to practice and making her dives better pays off,” said Tamm. “ She is the first diver from Becker to make the state tournament and I think we will see her there again in the future.”
