Last Saturday, a Becker lacrosse midfielder — Trenton Michels — sustained a serious injury on the field of play. Witnesses say he was struck in the midsection and immediately went down to the ground.
“We tended to him and quickly decided to bring him into the local emergency room,” said Trenton’s coach Paul VanVoorhis.
Trenton was then transferred by ambulance to St. Mary’s Trauma Center in Duluth.
Michels had surgery Sunday to bypass and essentially remove his kidney as it had been cut in half and doctors could not save any portion of it. As of this week, doctors are watching his hemoglobin levels and with the blood transfusions, they hope to stabilize Trenton to more normal levels.
Trenton’s parents, Jason and Sadi, said recovery has been painful and they are working on a better pain management program for him.
The following is a post from Trenton’s dad Sunday while he and Sadi attended to their son in Duluth — on Mother’s Day.
Today I’m sitting here with Sadi thinking about moms and how amazing they are. We are in Duluth at St. Mary’s Hospital with Trenton. He is currently in the ICU after an injury sustained while playing lacrosse yesterday. One of his kidneys was exploded and torn in half, he’s going to recover but it’s a very serious injury so a few prayers would be appreciated.
But back to my point about amazing moms just seeing Sadi here with Trent and how much She loves him is amazing, thank God for Moms. Lexi (daughter) gave birth to beautiful Avery in October and at that moment I was able to see that love from her, again a mother’s love, thank God. I can also say there is a good chance I wouldn’t be here today writing about my wife’s love as a mother and my daughter’s love as a mother, if I myself hadn’t had the love of an amazing mother, she is a big part of the person I am today. So thanks to all the mothers who have shared that love for your children it’s truly a blessing to us all.
Thankfully Trent is strong and we are expecting the best. He just has a lot more work to do. So please keep the prayers coming.
A GoFundMe page has been created for Trenton to help defray medical costs and it can be found at: www.gofundme.com/trenton039s-road-to-recovery.
