The same Becker girls basketball team that took second place at state this spring, this time took home first place in two Breakdown Summer Series basketball tournaments in Lakeville Sunday night.
The Bulldogs, consisting of Dani Nuest, Ayla Brown, Maren Westin, Julia Bengtson, Alayna Lindquist, Courtney Nuest, Alexis Goebel, Adeline Kent, Megan Gamble, and Jackie Yoerg, beat Owatonna in the first game of the first tournament, then beat Rockford in the semis to advance to the championship against Lakeville South.
The Lady Bulldogs defeated the Cougars by three points in overtime!
“Adeline Kent really excelled in this contest,” said Head Coach Dan Baird. “And Maren Westin hit two key free throws in overtime to seal the victory.”
The other teams competing in the tournament were Huron (SD), Lake Crystal Welcome Memorial, Waconia and Tri-City United.
“It was a fun tournament,” said Baird. “Great facilities too.”
In the second tournament this past Wednesday, the girls claimed another championship by defeating Rogers 61-38, Big Lake 62-46 and Anoka 55-29 to go 3-0. Cayla Paumen was added to this second tournament team.
Rogers took second with a 2-1 record.
“We used pressure defense in all three games and did a great job dictating our style of play,” said Baird. “We also did a great job attacking the offensive glass after missed shots.”
Baird’s young team is very unselfish.
“I was very happy with our passing as well, as we consistently made the extra pass to find the open player on offense for high percentage shots,” he said. “We didn't make a high percentage, but we made the right plays.”
His team is playing at a high level right now (especially defensively) going into their Wisconsin Dells tournament that runs June 18-19.
