The Becker Lady Bulldogs traveled to Monticello this week to play in the annual Monticello Holiday Basketball Tournament. The Bulldogs participated in two games and lost both.
Princeton 57, Becker 34
The Princeton Tigers were Becker’s first opponent of the tournament Wednesday and the Tigers won the matchup handily by 23 points.
Madyson Shafer took control of the game for Princeton from the start and used her quickness and athleticism to put pressure on Becker's defense all night long. Shafer only scored 10 points, but she did so much more by dominating the game right from the outset.
Julia Bjurman also had a great night for the Tigers, as she piled up 21 points. Maddie Nierengartens added 13 points.
The Bulldogs were led by Madi Kerzman, who scored 16 points. Julia Bengtson added eight but Coach Dan Baird’s squad really struggled making shots in this game.
Chisago Lakes 73, Becker 54
Chisago Lakes came out on top by 19 as the Bulldogs lost their second game of the Monticello Tournament Thursday.
“I was very proud of our girls tonight because we competed all night long and played a favorable style of basketball,” said Baird.
The Wildcats were led by division one recruit, Carmen Backes, who tallied 27 points.
Becker played a box and one defense most of the night to try to contain her, but it proved futile.
“At times we were very affective, but she was hard to keep from scoring due to her skill set,” said Baird. “She is strong, cuts hard, can shoot and post up. She moves well even without the ball.”
Renee Tripp and McKenna Anderson took turns trying to contain Backes and did a nice job defensively against a superb player. Tripp was able to score 13 points, despite concentrating on stopping Backes. Tripp also had six rebounds.
Kerzman scored 12 points to go with 10 rebounds. Julia Bengtson had a nice stat line of 12 points, 10 assists and seven rebounds.
“Our players worked hard in this game and competed which is all I ask,” said the head coach.
The Lady Bulldogs have a season record of 2-6. Chisago Lakes improved to 5-1.
