Hornet wrestlers out in sections

The Big Lake wrestling team ended its 2022-2023 season with a second-round loss to St. Francis in the Section 6AA championships last Thursday.

The Hornets got past Zimmerman, 54-24 in the opening round.

In that match, Kale Westgaard at 106 pounds opened with a pin of Gabe Swenson at 5:59 to give Big Lake a 6-0 lead.

Zimmerman’s Zander Spitzmueller came back with a 9-5 decision over Avery McFadin at 113 pounds.

At 120, Cash Stortz pinned Beau Dipprey at 5:14. But Christopher Belair of Zimmerman got those points back by pinning Gavin Jones at 1:55.

Dallas Sibbet of the Hornets got a forfeit win at 132 before Cole Campbell beat Big Lake’s William Hess, 8-6 at 138.

At 145 Zack Smith won by forfeit.

Zimmerman’s Sam Miller pinned Spencer Vold at 5:00 at 152 to pull the Thunder to within 24-18. But the Hornets won the next four matches.

At 160, Charles Mikely (won by forfeit.

Carson Gellerman pinned Dalton Bryner at 0:15 at 170.

At 182, Gauge Hoffman won by forfeit and Johnathon Murphy also got a forfeit win at 195.

At 220, Zimmerman’s Brooks Howard pinned Trajan Mussehl at 4:55 before Kane Lapointe won at 285 by forfeit.

The Hornets won just four matches against St. Francis and lost, 51-18.

At 106, Kale Westgaard gave Big Lake its only lead with an 11-4 decision over Ashton Charmoli.

The Saints won the next eight weight classes:

At 113, Caden Borgen over Avery McFadin by Fall at 0:44.

At 120, Kyler Sherk by forfeit

At 126, Tegan Sherk over Gavin Jones by Fall at 3:16.

At 132, Gunner Hostetter over Dallas Sibbet, 13-7.

At 138, Kyle Halstensen over Zack Smith, 17-12.

At 145, Tyson Charmoli by forfeit.

At 152, Jacob Tilly over  Spencer Vold, 8-6.

At 160, Aydan Carlson over Charles Mikely by Fall at 1:13.

Big Lake won its second match at 170 when Carson Gellerman beat Brady Peltier, 6-1.

The Saints’ Bo Flagstad beat Gauge Hoffman by Fall at 0:48 at 182

At 195, Johnathon Murphy of the Hornets pinned Nick Pexa at 0:36.

Walter Guse of St. Francis pinned  Trajan Mussehl at 1:56 at 220 and Kane Lapointe ended the evening by pinning Easton Johnson of St. Francis at 0:53 at 285.

Friday, St. Francis beat Annandale/Maple Lake, 34-32 to reach the Section 6AA finals. Becker beat St. Francis, 35-23 in the championship match and is headed to the state meet.

Big Lake was scheduled to compete in the individual sections Friday and Saturday at Becker, weather permitting.
