The Big Lake girls track and field team is looking for some of the younger athletes to step up and have a good season when they finally get outside.
The team has 50 girls on the roster this season, compared to 36 last year when COVID restrictions affected many school activities.
“We had some good performances last year,” says Pelot. “It was a little weird with being a COVID season, but we were able to have some meets, which was important after 2020 when we didn’t have anything.”
Pelot has seen some promising signs already in the Becker Time Trials and Monticello Indoor meet early this season.
“The 4x100 relay should be good this season, with all the girls (Jade Flavin, Grace Gardner, Kennadie Ell and Grace McCrone) being together since their freshman year,” says Pelot.
Gardner was second in the triple jump and took third in the high jump at Monticello. Hannah Strom was second in the pole vault and Raina White took second in the long jump.
Ava Eastman, a freshman, had a great perfomance in the 200 meters at the Becker time trials.
Emilee Doperalski is the leader on the distance squad, just as she was on the cross country team. She will be joined by Jaden Anderson, one of the team captains, and a group of girls looking to break into the top three or four spots.
Hailey Anderson and Grace Olson should do well in shot put and discus. And Jax Ages should fit in well in the 400 meters, says Pelot.
It should be an interesting season,” says Pelot. Our fresman group is 15, which is amazing. I’m really excited to see how they do.”
The Hornets were scheduled to compete in a conference quad meet at home Tuesday. But because of weather conditions, the meet was postponed to a date to be determined. A 9th and 10th grade meet was scheduled for Thursday, weather permitting, results to follow next week.
The next two varsity meets are Tuesday at Cambridge and Thursday at Princeton.
