The Becker girls gymnastics team kicked off their 2017-18 season with a big win over Sauk Rapids-Rice Tuesday at home.
Becker 136.75, SRR 130.25
“I was really proud of all of the girls who were junior varsity gymnasts last year and are now working hard to fill in the varsity positions,” said Head Coach Jen Harmoning. “Amelia (Kirchner), Keeley (Holm), and Emi (Quill), along with Sarah (Woelfel), are showing great potential. I think we are going to grow a lot this season. It's exciting to be a part of it!”
Vault Exercise
The girls began the event on vault, where senior Miranda O’Brien picked up right from last year and demonstrated why she is a force to be reckoned with in this routine — with hopes of making it to state.
Results: 1). O'Brien (BB), 9.625; 2). Woelfel (BB) 9.175; 3). Lindsay Olsen (BB) 9.0; 4). Ann Starr, (SRR) 8.6; 5). Anna Magnan (SRR) 8.525.
“Miranda had her best season start ever competing a layout tsukahara and scoring her second best career score,” said Harmoning. “Sarah competed a piked tsukahara for the first time and scored her personal best score of 9.175.”
Bars Exercise
On bars, eighth-grader Woelfel put on quite a show for the fans as she captured first place with a personal best score.
Results: 1). Woelfel (BB) 8.55; 2). Carly Weisenbeck (SRR) 8.275; 3). O'Brien (BB) 8.15; 4). Liberty Kosloski (SRR) 8.125; 5). Quill (BB) 8.1.
“We had a couple of mistakes on bars but still had a strong first showing on this event,” said the head coach.
Beam Exercise
“The beam team performed quite well overall,” said Harmoning.
Results: 1). O'Brien (BB) 9.175; 2). Starr (SRR) 8.375; 3). Holm (BB) 8.0; 4). Kosloski (SRR) 7.975; 5). Olsen (BB) 7.925.
“The team had several missed skill connections that cost valuable tenths here and there. That will help improve the team score quite a bit to make those connections better. Woelfel once again had a personal best score.”
Floor Exercise
O’Brien once again wowed the crowd with a solid routine that is destined to be razor-sharp by season’s end.
Results: 1). O'Brien (BB) 9.275; 2). Kirchner (BB) 8.6; 3). Magnan (SRR) 8.575; 4-tie). Olsen and Quill (BB) 8.5.
“Miranda did a really nice routine to start the season, and she is hoping to add some new tumbling passes later on,” said Harmoning.
All-Around
In the all-around, O’Brien took home top honors followed closely by three fellow Bulldogs.
Results: 1). O'Brien (BB) 36.225; 2). Woelfel (BB) 33.675; 3). Olsen (BB) 33.325; 4). Quill (BB) 32.8; 5). Weisenbeck (SRR) 32.475.
“It was great to see Miranda start the season with such a good, solid all-around score,” said Harmoning. “She is definitely motivated to make her senior year the best yet.”
Harmoning couldn’t help but gush about her talented youngsters.
“Sarah (Woelfel) scored yet another personal best in the all-around,” she said. “She had a mistake on floor, but she definitely showed us tonight that she intends to step up big this year to fill in some of our routines lost to graduation last year.”
