The Eagles hockey team had two wins during a three-day tournament in Barron, WI over the weekend. The Eagles lost their first game to Amery 5-1, then defeated Burnett/Grantsburg 13-2 and Northwest Icemen 6-1. Both Schug and Hartfiel came out of the three games with eight points a piece.
Their first game was Dec. 29. Hartfiel would score the only goal for the Eagles late in the game, but he had to battle back from a penalty to do so.
“The team played okay but gave away second period with too many penalties,” said Coach Jason Hartfiel. “Hartfiel got unsportsmanlike. Just like Doran a few games ago he is player we can’t afford to not have on the ice.”
Hartfiel was stuck in box an extra 2:30.
“It’s one of those penalties you can’t get out till whistle and we couldn’t get one,” said Coach Hartfiel.
The next day the Eagles took on Burnett and won in commanding fashion 13-2. Schug (Beckstrom assist) scored for the Eagles first. Hartfiel, Rydberg, Mehelich (power play) and Doran (power play) would all score a goal within five minutes of Schug’s goal. Rydberg and Schug would each score one more before the end of the first, putting the Eagles up 7-0.
Nelson and Beckstrom scored power play goals near the end of the second period to put the Eagles up 9-1. Kollar (power play), Schug (power play and short handed) and Hartfiel (power play) would give the Eagles four more goals in the third period to win 13-2.
On New Year’s Eve, the Eagles played their last game of the tournament against Northwest Icemen.
The first period would have four goals for the Eagles. Ruppelius, Mehelich (power play), Schug (short handed) and Ruppelius would score. Doran, Hartfiel and Schug would have assists. The Eagles were up 4-1 going into the second.
After no score, the third period had two early goals by the Eagles to win the game. Rydberg and Doran would score the last two goals with assists from Hartfiel.
