The Eagles have kicked off their season with a win on the road and a loss at home this week.
The Eagles, feeling this season to be a great chance at a postseason run, travelled to Bagley to start the season Saturday against the Flyers. The result was a decisive 3-1 win, giving the Eagles a strong start. After trailing 1-0 since the first period and no score in the second, the Eagles mounted a massive comeback with three goals in the third.
Just seconds in that period Ryan Murnane scored to tie the game and put the Eagles on the board. Half a minute later Aubrey Hartfiel, assisted by Logan Beckstrom gave the Eagles the lead. Towards the end of the period, Hartfiel scored again on an empty net to secure the victory for the Eagles.
Thirteen total penalties (minor; 2:00) were given, five of which went against Becker-Big Lake. Zach Piehl was goalkeeper, facing 25 shots and saving 24. The Eagles mounted 23 shot attempts against the Flyers.
Tuesday, the Eagles had their home opener, hosting Legacy Christian Lions. Despite an lead early, they fell 5-3.
At 2:24 in the first period Eagles’ Billy Braun, assisted by Jake Piehl, put them to an early lead. Thirty seconds later Max Nelson, assisted by Murnane and Phil Stalpes, put the Eagles up 2-0.
In the second, Legacy Christian put themselves on the board early, but the Eagles looked to extend their lead and just 18 seconds after that goal, scored again with Weston Schug, assisted by Murnane and J. Piehl, and kept the Eagles on top 3-1.
The third period would be all Legacy Christian as they scored four unanswered goals and handed the Eagles their first loss of the season. The final was 5-3.
Four minor two minute penalties were handed to Eagles, Legacy Christian would receive three.
Zach Piehl tended the goal for the Eagles for the game’s entirety, facing 34 shots against him, saving 29. The Eagles had 30 shots against Legacy Christian.
The season stands at 1-1, Dec. 6 is the next matchup for the Eagles, as they host the 2-1 St. Paul Highland Park Scots.
