Over 800 people were estimated to have taken part in the first-ever Community Concert at the Creek at Pebble Creek Golf Course in Becker last Saturday night.
The featured bands were local artists Outside Recess and Chris Hawkey of KFAN Radio fame. The weather was ideal and the music seemed to harmoniously ingratiate the 21-and-older crowd.
“Eight hundred people,” Pebble Creek Golf Pro Troy Malo exclaimed. “That’s about two times more than what I was realistically hoping for. I couldn’t be any happier.”
Malo got swell reviews from patrons and community members as well as a ringing endorsement from Hawkey himself.
“Hawkey sent one of my distributors a message that said all in capital letters, ‘A WELL RUN EVENT’,” said Malo. “This was great for the community of Becker.”
The bands played for several hours on a stage set up on the driving range tee area. Malo had overflow parking available (which was used) at the community center and said he heard the local pubs and hotels saw a “bump” from the overspill of people who came out for the big event.
“My hope is all the proceeds will go back to the building fund of the golf course, said Malo, “so we can improve our landscaping, tee markers and awnings that are in really rough shape.”
It’ll be up to city council though on where the revenue from the event will be used and what funds it’ll be stashed in.
Malo had 14 staffers from Pebble Creek working the outdoor event while four stayed indoors to accommodate other patrons. Twenty-seven volunteers from the men’s and women’s clubs, season pass holders, local businesses and the high school football team also helped make the event go off seamlessly.
“A lot of work went into this concert,” said Malo. “A lot of time and a lot of energy, too. I want to thank all our sponsors, volunteers, staffers, police and businesses and guests who made it all possible.”
Malo said he was also extremely grateful to Dwight Lundeen and his football team for volunteering to do clean-up the next day Sunday.
