The Becker Buzzards 35+ baseball team opened their season in the Fergus Falls tournament last Saturday afternoon.
Becker 5, Clarissa 3
The first game was against Clarissa and the Cubs scored first with two runs in the top of the first on two walks, an error and a single.
The Buzzards made it 2-1 with a run in the bottom of the second when Matt O'Neill doubled and scored on a Nick Allerson single.
The Cubs pushed the lead back to two with a solo home run in the top of the third.
The Buzzards again pulled within one when Jason Pfingsten scored on a single off the bat of Buzzard rookie Jason Wald.
Another Buzzard rookie, Matt Koester, tied the game with a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Buzzards would take their first lead when Rich Petty reached on a fielder's choice and moved to third on a Pfingsten double. Todd Klaers hit a fly ball to centerfield that allowed Petty to tag and score. Wald then followed with his second RBI single to plate Pfingsten and make the score 5-3.
Pfingsten then came on to pitch the final two innings and pick up the save. Tanner Bakke got the win, going five innings and allowing three runs. Wald and Allerson each had two hits on the day.
Postponement
The second game of the day against Kensington was postponed due to impending weather and will be made up as part of a doubleheader in Becker July 21.
Up Next
The Buzzards will be back in action today (Saturday) at 1:30 p.m. when they take on the Becker Bandits in the third annual Freedom Days matchup. The Buzzards won last year's game, but rumor has it that Bandits manager Cole Hanson has done some heavy recruiting in the hopes of running up the score on the "old guys".
The game will be held at the High School varsity baseball field.
