Buzzards Split With Clippers

The Becker Buzzards traveled to Alexandria Sunday for a doubleheader with the Classic Clippers.

Clippers 5, Buzzards 2

Alexandria got on the board with two runs in the bottom of the first of the first game on a  walk and a couple of singles.  The lead moved to 4-0 when the Clippers added two more runs in the bottom of the third.

The Buzzards answered with a run in the top of the fourth when Rich Petty and Jason Pfingsten led off with back-to-back singles and scored on a groundout off the bat of Kyle Sytsma.

The Clippers got the run back in the bottom of the inning and the game's final run was scored by the Buzzards in the top of the fifth when  Matt Koester led off with a double and scored on a groundout.

Tanner Bakke took the loss, going five innings, allowing five runs on seven hits and three walks.  He struck out four.

Buzzards 10, Clippers 0

In game two, the Buzzard bats came to life and plated 10 runs in just five innings in a 10-run rule victory.

The Buzzards got off to a quick start as Steve Newman and Pfingsten each scored in the bottom of the first for a 2-0 lead.

Two more runs would cross the plate in the third as Petty doubled and Pfingsten singled with one out.  Petty scored on a Klaers groundout and Pfingsten came home on an RBI single off the bat of Sytsma.

In the bottom of the fourth, Nick Allerson, Brian Kolbinger and Jason Baune led off the inning with three straight singles, with Baune's single driving in Allerson.  Newman then laid down a bunt that was mishandled and the bases were loaded with nobody out.   After a pop-up for the first out, Pfingsten lined a single to left that scored Kolbinger and Baune to push the lead to 7-0.  Newman and Pfingsten then scored on an RBI single from Klaers to make it 9-0.

In the bottom of the fifth, two walks and a hit by pitch loaded the bases.  After the Clippers got an out at home, Petty hit a shallow fly ball that was dropped, which allowed Kolbinger to score the game’s final run.

Brian Kolbinger got the victory, going four shutout innings.  He allowed four hits and two walks while striking out two.
