Bulldogs Miss Chance To Knock Off First Place Cathedral

The Becker Bulldog boys basketball team lost a close one to the #1 team in the Granite Ridge Conference to fall to 5-9 overall and 3-2 in the GRC. Cathedral 72, Becker 64 (OT)

Becker gave their all Tuesday night as they battled the undefeated St. Cloud Cathedral Crusaders right down to the wire, only to succumb in overtime to the Crusaders who led by one at half. St. Cloud was facing their fourth loss of the year and first in the conference, losing by three with the clock winding down.

Michael Veldman (18) and Andrew Davalos (10) both scored in double figures for the Bulldogs, looking for the upset.

Two of Cathedral’s three losses this year have been in overtime, but those were more defensive-minded games than Tuesday’s against Becker.
The Bulldogs charged out in the second half behind Veldman and Davalos and had the Crusaders cornered before they battled back from a nine-point deficit. Jack Schramel had the last three points in regulation to tie the game up and tallied the first four points in overtime for Cathedral.

St. Cloud’s Bryant Bohlig was 6-for-6 shooting free throws and had 22 points in the win. Brindley Theisen was the team’s leading scorer with 24 points.

Cathedral led 26-25 at halftime.

Becker hosted Mora Friday night  and Delano Saturday afternoon (see next week’s Citizen for results), then travel to Monticello Tuesday before coming home Thursday to take on Zimmerman.
