Big Lake boys lose 2

The Hornet boys basketball team dropped two contests last week, one to Delano and the other to Becker.

Last Friday Big Lake welcomed the Delano Tigers to town for a late season non-conference matchup. The Tigers came into the game ranked #6 in the state for Class AAA. They backed up that ranking against the Hornets with a 94-43 win.

Big Lake was unable to slow down Delano’s offense as the Tigers led 57-18 at halftime. Owen Wilczek was the only Hornet able to generate much offensively, finishing with 12 points. Trevor Maruska scored six and Aidan Johnson had five.

On Tuesday, the team made the short trip to Becker for a Mississippi 8 Conference matchup. The Hornets, once again, struggled to contain the opponent’s offense in an 87-80 defeat.

Big Lake trailed 43-39 at the break but took the lead for stretches in the second half. The Hornets took a 62-60 lead midway through the half, but Becker responded with a 21-4 run to pull ahead 81-66. Big Lake quickly responded with a 10-0 run of their own to get within five, but that was as close as they would get down the stretch.

Maruska led both sides in scoring with 30 points. Wilczek scored 17, Johnson added 12, and Isaiah Terlinden finished with 11.

Next up for the Hornets is a non-conference game against Sauk Rapids-Rice on Friday before another conference game on Monday at Cambridge.
