Battle of state ranked gymnastics teams goes to Big Lake

Last Tuesday, the ninth ranked Becker Bulldogs hosted #1 ranked Big Lake in a Senior Night gymnastics meet, with the Hornets emerging victorious, 146.625 to 139.95. Becker’s total team score was their second highest of the season. However, the depth of the Hornets proved valuable to Big Lake as the Hornets retained their top ranking.

The Bulldogs kept pace with their rival in the vault competition, scoring 36.5 to the Hornets’ 36.55.

Becker’s Emma Hennessey hit her best vault of the season to tie for first place with Big Lake’s Britney Krumrei, each scoring a 9.475.  Karli Kirk and Lauren Woelfel also hit great vaults that placed them in the top five scoring 9.25 and 9.075, respectively, for the Bulldogs.

Scoring: tied for 1st: Hennessey (PR) and Krumrei, 9.475; 3rd: Autumn Grunewald (BL 9.325), 4th: Kirk (Bec 9.25); 5th: Woelfel (Bec 9.075 (PR)).

The next event was the bars, and Big Lake jumped out with a strong performance.

Scoring: 1st: Krumrei (BL 9.45), 2nd: Grunewald (BL 9.15), 3rd: Amber Grunewald (BL 8.825), 4th: Katie Goracke (BL 8.75), 5th: Kirk (Bec 8.7).

On the beam, Becker was unable to make a move, as every gymnast for the Bulldogs took one fall.

“We had too many falls and it prevented us from making up some ground on beam,” Becker coach Jen Harmoning said.

Scoring: 1st: Allie Lu (BL 9.6), 2nd: Krumrei (BL 9.225), 3rd: Amber Grunewald (BL 9.0), 4th: Woelfel (Bec 8.75), 5th: Autumn Grunewald (BL 8.7).

“We finished with strong performances on floor, with four of the five gymnasts hitting good strong routines,” Harmoning said. “Hennessey led the way for us with Woelfel and Bella Kuschel close on her heels.  Once again, the Hornets’ difficulty level was a bit too much for us to make up any ground.”

Scoring: 1st: Krumrei (BL 9.45), 2nd: Goracke (BL 9.4), 3rd: Autumn Grunewald (BL 9.275), 4th: Amber Grunewald (BL 9.25), 5th: Hennessey (Bec 9.2), 6th: Woelfel (Bec 9.1), 7th: Kuschel (Bec 8.95).

In the all around scoring, Big Lake’s Krumrei and Autumn Grunewald took the top two spots, while Woelfel scored third place for the Bulldogs with a 35.325. Kirk came in 4th, hitting 35.1 points for Becker.

Last weekend, Big Lake took first and Becker took fourth in the JV conference championships.

“The JV team finished off what has been a fabulous season with a strong finish,” Harmoning said.  “The scores were really tight at the top of the results and we were really proud to be one of the strong teams up in that group. The top eight on each event were recognized and awarded a ribbon.”

Becker’s top finishers included: Vault: 5th place- Bella Kuschel 8.8 (PR) and 7th place Cassie Larson 8.7 (tie); Beam- 7th place tie- Sofia Bonsante and Sabrina Jensen 8.05; Floor - 4th place- Hailey Duncombe 8.65 and 6th place- Cassie Larson 8.55; All-Around - 3rd place- Hailey Duncombe 32.3 (PR), 4th place- Sabrina Jensen 32.2, and  6th place- Sofia Bonsante 32.1.
