Hardware Connection magazine presented 3 Sons Hardware, owned by Lori and Dave Ables, the 2025 Beacon Award for Best New Store during the Awards Gala at the Independent Home Improvement (IHI) Conference, July 30 at the JW Marriott Orlando Grande Lakes.

The Beacon Awards honor excellence in independent hardware retail across North America. Now in its 13th year, the program recognizes stores that go above and beyond in serving their customers and communities. 

Opened in May 2022, 3 Sons Hardware brought a fresh, full-service hardware offering to Big Lake, Minn., quickly establishing itself as a vital part of the local community. The store’s inviting layout, strong product assortment, and family-forward culture helped it stand out during the nomination process.

“3 Sons Hardware is a perfect example of how a new store can hit the ground running with purpose, clarity, and commitment,” said Doug Donaldson, editor of Hardware Connection. “Lori and Dave Ables have created something special—not just a retail destination, but a community resource.
