Five Big Lake wrestlers are headed to the state meet this weekend after finishing first or second in their weight class at the Section 6AA Tournament in Monticello Friday and Saturday.
Cash Sixberry, Christian Noble, Nolan Reiter, Dillon Browen and Johnathon Murphy each qualified with impressive performances in the 12-team individual sections.
Sixberry (39-2) took the title at 113 pounds. After a first-round bye, he pinned Anthony Perez of Monticello at 1:16. He followed with a pin of Brayden Boots of St. Francis at 1:45 in the semifinals, then beat Kaden Nicolas of Becker, 6-3 in the championship match.
Noble (45-1) finished second at 126 pounds and lost his first match of the season in the title round. He pinned Blake Herbst at 1:31 to open the action. He followed with pins of Wesley Zuelke of Annandale-Maple Lake (0:41) and Quinn McCalla of Monticello (3:48) before losing a 2-1 decision to Tyson Charmoli (38-2). Noble earned second with a pin of Gabe Nelson of Dassel-Cokato/Litchfield at 0:17.
Reiter (43-6) finished second at 132 pounds. He opened with a pin of Kellen Martin of Zimmerman at 1:19. He beat Brayden Ness of St. Francis by major decision, 13-2. Then he beat Mitch Koss of Annandale-Maple Lake by technical fall, 16-1. In the finals, he lost to undefeated (43-0) Tyler Wells of Princeton, 16-5.
Browen (35-11) took the title at 145 pounds. After an opening round bye, he beat Wyatt Witschen of Monticello by technical fall, 20-5. He beat Devin Steinhaus of Dassel-Cokato/Litchfield, 4-1, then followed with a 4-3 win over Cole Rudnitski of Foley in the championship match.
Murphy (38-7) won the 170-pound weight class. After a first-round bye, the eighth-grader pinned Alex Klatt of Annandale-Maple Lake at 2:13. He beat Sam Marx of Dassel-Cokato/Litchfield, 14-10. Then he edged Tyson Ricker of Becker, 8-6 in overtime for the title.
In other action, six more Hornets finished in the top six spots in their weight class but did not qualify for the state meet.
Ivan Lapointe (24-13) finished his season with a fifth place finish at 106 pounds. The freshman had three wins in the tournament. He beat Anton Cox of Dassel-Cokato/Litchfield by tech fall, 16-1. He beat Cassen Brumm of Annandale-Maple Lake, 14-2, and he beat Kameron Moscho of Rocori, 8-2.
Cash Stortz (21-9) took fourth at 120 pounds with two wins. After a bye, he beat Timothy Kohl of Princeton, 16-2 and Gunner Hostetter of St. Francis, 7-2.
Carson Gellerman (18-13) placed sixth at 152 pounds. He beat Kieran Hixson of Sauk-Rapids/Rice, 13-1 and pinned Griffen Fieldseth of Monticello at 5:15.
Tyler Dehmer (30-15) finished fourth at 160 pounds. He pinned Jacob Tilly of St. Francis at 1:58. He pinned Carson Cooper of Annandale-Maple Lake at 5:15. After a decision loss in the semifinals, he pinned Zack Jennison of Foley at 0:49 before a 6-3 loss to Adam Jurek of Becker in his final match.
Trajan Mussehl (14-6) placed sixth at 220 pounds. He had a bye win and pinned Easton Johnson of St. Francis at 2:42 before falling to James Meuwissen of Annandale-Maple Lake in the fifth-place match.
Kane Lapointe (29-18) took fourth at 285 pounds. After a first-round bye, he pinned Cameron Smith of Sauk Rapids at 0:37. He lost to undefeated Elijah Novak of Foley, then pinned Ben Bauer of Monticello at 2:17. He lost by tiebreaker to Brendan Rokala of Dassel-Cokato/Litchfield, 4-1 in his last match.
Action at the state meet (Xcel Energy Center) began this weekend (March 4-5) with the preliminary round at 9 a.m. Friday and quarterfinals starting at 4 p.m. Semifinals start 9 a.m. Saturday, with championship matches starting 4 p.m.
