Two Becker athletes were part of a local soccer team that won the state championship at the MYSA Summer State Championships, July 23 held in Coon Rapids, Mankato and Shakopee. Tate Weise and Logan Boyer played on the team of Coon Rapids United 17U C3. The team finished league play with a record of 7-3-0 and placed second in their division.
CR United won first place in two-out-of-three tournaments, while finishing second in the third tournament.
They won the North District Tournament with both games going into shoot outs to determine a winner.
This win earned them a trip to the state tournament where they would play in a four-team bracket starting with a single elimination round with the winner advancing to either a championship or consolation game (guaranteed two games).
CR United beat Faribault in the first game, 4-2 in Mankato at noon July 17, then tied an undefeated Austin team later that day in the semifinals. That tie placed them in the championship game against Willmar, who had beat Worthington 2-1 and Eagan, 6-1 to gain the title game.
CR United capped off their impressive season with an exciting, 2-1 victory over Willmar for the state championship.
MYSA administers a season-ending summer state championship for leagues for both boys and girls in U11, U12, U13, U14, U15, U16, U17, U18 and U19 in all competitive divisions.
