Dorthy Jean Spencer

Age 87 of Big Lake, died Friday, November 6, 2015, at the St. Cloud Hospital.  A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, November 14, 2015, 3:30PM, at the Peterson-Grimsmo Chapel, 250 East Broadway, Monticello, with Visitation starting at 3:00PM.  Private interment.

Dorthy was born in Big Lake on October 6, 1928, to Cecil and Ruth (Knapp) Eddy.  She and her mother were both born in the home which has now been occupied by her family since the 1800's. She was married to Jerry LeRoy Spencer in 1950 at Big Lake Union Church.  Dorthy was an elementary school teacher in Milaca and also substitute taught for many years at schools in Becker (where she established the remedial reading program), Brainerd, Baxter, and Big Lake.  For many years she was active in churches, Boy Scouts, and 4-H, also volunteering for a Rochester hospital drop-in center, Meals On Wheels, and after retirement, helped elementary children with reading while wintering near McAllen, Texas. She and Jerry were avid gardeners and campers; Dorthy felt the power and love of God through the wonders of nature, which constantly delighted her.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brother Rolland Eddy; and son Daniel Lee Spencer. Dorthy is survived by sons Steven (Sharon) of Stanley, WI, and Robin (Wei-Chi) of Plymouth; nine grandchildren, Meadow Spencer, Janna (Joel) Osofsky, Peter (Lara) Spencer, Loren “Spence” (Sarah) Spencer, Clare (Eric) Bartels, Susanna Spencer, Alexander Spencer, Christopher Spencer, Carianna Spencer; seven great grandchildren Sammi, Nate, Danny, Lexi, Mia, and Freddy Spencer, and Eddison Bartels.  Her mind was clear to the end, and we will sorely miss her mischievous sparkling eyes and warm hugs.
