Gertrude Sakry (Borst) has lived in Becker most of her 87 years. Gertie has always been an active person. She raised 11 children and has been blessed with 23 grandchildren and 43 great grandkids!
Gertie is a go-getter. In addition to raising a huge family, she drove bus for Becker Schools for 23 years and worked in the high school kitchen for just as long.
Gertie has enjoyed quilting for decades, but no longer is able to quilt since her eyesight has declined. Gertie’s faith is an important part of her life and she attends Faith Lutheran Church of Becker regularly. Gertie has served on the Becker cemetery board for the past 35+ years!
“I don’t remember a time when I didn’t know Gertie and her family,” says Reporter Mary Nehring. “I was blessed to go to school with many of her children and our families have remained friends my entire life. At the age of 87, I often see Gertie out walking in all kinds of weather.”
Gertie started walking seven years ago. She walks Monday through Friday mornings, as well as Sundays after church.
“The word on the street is that Gertie’s breaking point (as far as temperatures) is -10 degrees,” continued Nehring. “She also will not walk if the path is slippery. Even in the brutal Minnesota winter, as long as the path is cleared, Gertie will usually be out there by 7 a.m. (sometimes 8 a.m.)”
Gertie also takes a garbage bag with her each day to pick up trash. Gertie is certainly a bright spot and an inspiration. If you see her on the walking path in the early morning near the bridge just east of Becker off Co. Rd. 24 (formerly known as Co. Rd. 4), give Gertie a wave and a thumbs up. Go, Gertie!
