Vietnam-era military veterans from the entire region are invited to attend a 50th anniversary recognition at Becker City Park Saturday (Sept. 17).
Becker City Park is on Co. Rd. 23 (Sherburne Ave.) just north and across from Pebble Creek Golf Course. Time of the event is 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Veterans will have the opportunity for a picnic of sloppy joes and the trimmings, plus refreshments.
They will all receive a carved plaque, in the shape of the State of Minnesota, with the inscription, “You served with Honor. Welcome Home.”
Roger Bigalke of the Becker American Legion, one of the event organizers, reports some veterans have been asked to address the group during its program. He is asking other veterans who wish to speak to contact him at 1-320-217-9177.
The event is scheduled to coincide with the 50th anniversary of America leaving the Vietnam War.
Several local officials will also be speaking, including Mayor Lefty Kleis of Becker, Mayor RaeAnne Danielowski of Big Lake, Bruce Price, county veterans officer, Sheriff Joel Brott and Rep. Jim Newberger.
The event is being sponsored by the Becker and Big Lake Beyond the Yellow Ribbon committees.
