Twelve excited Becker Primary School students received a ride home in a firetruck after winning a coloring contest held by the Becker Fire Dept.
Each fall during Fire Prevention Week the students are given tours of the fire station along with a presentation on fire safety. They’re also given coloring sheets with fire safety tips on them to color and submit to the coloring contest the department holds.
Becker firefighter and Public Safety Officer Ron Kortz chooses four winners from each grade, kindergarten, first and second. Those lucky students receive a ride home from Kortz in one of the department’s firetrucks. He delivers the students to wherever they usually go after school, whether it be to their homes, daycare or back to school for their parents to pick up.
“The students can choose if they want to pull up with lights and sirens on,” said Kortz with a smile. “Most do.”
Because of space limitations, the students are broken into two groups. The first group of winners, Kaisa McGowan, Finlee Esping, Emma Aaseby, Jonathan Plantenberg, Dylan Warzecha and Prya Gram, received their rides Nov. 2.
This Tuesday saw the second group of students, Aysa Johnson, Ava Lundorff, Logan Imholte, Grace Davis, Bently Sotendahl and Triton Ross, getting their rides home.
The fire department has held the contest annually for a number of years.
