Xcel Energy Sherco plant employees recently welcomed a group from the Wounded Warrior Project for three days of bow hunting on plant property, according to Xcel media relations Rep. Patty Nystuen. It is the second time the Becker generating facility has hosted the wounded veterans group.
Six guest hunters participated in the event this year, which took place from Sept. 24 through Sept. 26. They hunted on 4,500 acres of company-owned property along the Mississippi River outside of the plant’s operating area. The property is open to limited archery hunting every other year with the encouragement of the MN Dept. of Natural Resources and local traffic authorities in an effort to reduce the hazards created by expanding deer populations in the area.
The bow hunt “supports the Wounded Warrior Project’s mission to nurture wounded military service members in mind and body and to foster their adjustment to civilian life,” Nystuen said.
“This effort also reflects Xcel Energy’s commitment as a top military-friendly company and Sherco plant employees’ appreciation for the price our veterans have paid in serving this country,” said Bill Wilts, Sherco plant service specialist and himself a veteran. “The support, collaboration and positive energy this event generates is a great thing to be a part of.”
The event included a dinner with Becker city officials, a dinner hosted by the Becker American Legion, a barbecue lunch at the Sherco plant and a Friday evening cookout hosted by the Becker Yellow Ribbon Committee.
