Senator Andrew Mathews (R–Princeton) released the following statement after the University of Northwestern and Crown College won their case, Loe v. Walz, which challenged a 2023 law aimed at removing faith-based universities from the state’s Post-Secondary Enrollment Options (PSEO) program:
“A federal judge ruled over the weekend that the DFL trifecta’s law targeting religious and Christian universities that offered PSEO classes was unconstitutional,” said Sen. Mathews. “Two years ago, I told my Democrat colleagues this law discriminated against religion, violated the First Amendment, and would be struck down. That’s exactly what happened. This is another example of Governor Walz and the Democrats passing controversial laws only to have the courts overturn them.”
“It’s a clear win for religious liberty at a time when it’s under attack every day, even from lawmakers. Passing unconstitutional laws might score political points, but it wastes court resources and threatens the freedoms of all Minnesotans.”
