The Sherburne County Historical Society recently held its Volunteer Appreciation Dinner and Annual Meeting at the Sherburne History Center in Becker.
The dinner celebrated the volunteers who donated over 600 hours of labor in the past 12 months. Volunteer projects include collections care, exhibits, research, public event programs, and more.
The annual meeting opened with Executive Director Mike Brubaker giving a summary of the Center’s past year of events, programs, and internet/social media engagements. Brubaker reported that in 2017, between visitors, research contacts, website and social media contacts, and public events, the History Center had 91,129 contacts – a number that has been on the rise every year.
Brubaker and the SHC staff also recognized volunteers and the two SHC board members whose terms are expiring.
Following Brubaker’s presentation of the official business, he turned the evening over to Denis Gardner from the Minnesota State Historic Preservation Office. Gardner presented a program on the National Register of Historic Places and how a building or site can be included in that repository.
He included images and information on Sherburne County’s five National Register sites – The Herbert Fox House at the Sherburne History Center, Handke Stadium, the Elk River water tower, the Oliver Kelley Farm, and the prison facility in St Cloud. The audience participated with numerous questions and stories.
