Mike Is Coming Home

“He must have blisters on his blisters.”

That was a comment proclaiming the completion of a cancer walk that took four months to accomplish.

Mike Garland this week completed the 2,665-mile Pacific Crest trail walk from Mexico to Canada and is currently heading home to Minnesota to rest his feet, back, legs and mind while allowing his blisters to heal, too.
Mike’s walk was to raise funds for cancer research through the Becker Relay for Life campaign.

His family and friends are planning a “Welcome Mike Home” event at Beck’s Pub Sept. 17 at 1 p.m. An appreciation meal will be served along with cake at 2 p.m.

Mike left for the border of the United States and Mexico at the end of April and finally completed the northbound trail 134 days later. He journalled his weekly (sometimes daily) treks through the deserts, highlands, mountains and streams — all for a cause that is near-and-dear to his heart.

“My Dad has completed the PCT,” said Mike’s daughter Missy. “Over 2,665 miles, all for the fight for a cure! Super proud of him and the journey he took. Can't wait to see him!”

At the September welcome home event, Mike will  be selling raffle tickets to supporters and guests with someone winning the chance to shave Mike’s beard and long hair. All funds raised will, of course, go to Relay for Life.
