Day 108: On Aug. 1, Mike decided to take a few days off to visit with his wife, Peggy and a couple of his grandkids. Mike’s wife and granddaughter, Michaela, then took off for Seattle while grandson, Cody, stayed behind to hike with Mike.
“I'm excited to share this experience with him and get him involved in the American Cancer Society,” said Mike before they hit the trail together.
Cody, 13, and Mike had their first day of hiking together on Aug. 6 and by Aug. 11, Cody was “sick to his stomach and dizzy.” Mike figured Cody was also homesick by then.
“I am very proud of what he did,” said Mike. “He hiked 115.3 miles for Relay for Life. It's nice to have some company out on the trail, too.”
By Aug. 12, Mike reported he has about 710 miles left until he finishes the trail.
“I am thinking — provided I stay healthy and everything continues as it has — I should be done in about five weeks,” he said.
