The lingering snow and ice from last week’s storms didn’t help add to the turnout at the 158th Birthday Celebration at the Sherburne History Center in Becker last Saturday morning, but those hardy souls that did turn out enjoyed a morning of games, guided tours and some delicious cake and orange juice served up by the SHC staff and volunteers.
Members of Scout Troop 89 from Big Lake took part in the program enthusiastically, putting on the fake glasses and mustaches for a turn in the photo booth, working on the craft tables set up by SHC staff and taking special guided tours of the exhibits inside the museum. They also enjoyed the handsome birthday cake from Cold Spring Bakery, along with a glass or two of orange juice.
Program Director Karah Hawkinson and Curator Mo Galvin joined with the volunteers on hand to serve out the refreshments, as well as conducting tours and answering questions about the center and the exhibits throughout the morning.
Upcoming events include a segment of the Winter Lecture Series Weds., March 5 at 2 p.m., when a Native American speaker will discuss the traditional harvest of maple trees and the making of syrup and candy, Hawkinson said. The Book Club will meet at 6:30 p.m. Thurs., March 6 to discuss Northern Slave, Black Dakota by Walt Bachman.
