Flower Power

BY GARY W. MEYER, EDITOR

There is a bright and lively patch of sunflowers in bloom along Co. Rd. 11, between Becker and Monticello.
Property owners Phil & Shawn Paul (Fish Sunflowers) are inviting the public to stop in and enjoy the late-summer natural arrangement - and even pick a few to take with them as they leave.
Address for the property is 16604 Co. Rd. 11 SE, Big Lake.
Visitors are welcome to take senior portraits at the sunflower patch - and there are various props provided, including an old car. The patch is open sun-up to sundown.
They are asked not to trample the sunflowers - and plenty off off road parking is provided.
Visitors are encouraged to visit soon, because if the area doesn’t get rain soon, the flowers may not make it much longer.
While the sunflower field is a relatively-new visual delight, the home adjacent to it boasts many memories for residents.
Marilyn Olson of Becker grew up in the house. Her grandparents owned the unique saltbox home and her parents, Roscoe and Mildred Edwards, lived in the house starting in 1925, raising six of eight children there.
Marilyn’s mother continued to live in the house until 1997, when she passed away.
Marilyn’s sister, Sylvia Vandergon, owned the house from 1997 to 2014, then sold it to the Pauls, who are the current owners.
