County Approves Phase Ii Bids

The Sherburne County Board Tuesday approved the bids for the second phase of the Government Center expansion project.

So far, the new parking lot is completed and work continues on excavation for the new building and site utilities.

Phase II incudes structural steel supply, steel installation and concrete work.

Tuesday’s bid award includes $1,259,100 to Northland Concrete for cast-in-place concrete, $954,300 to Central MM Fabrication for supplying structural steel and $574,000 to Danny’s Construction Company to erect the steel.

Carey Everson with Adolfson & Peterson said the three bids came in $540,219 less than the engineer’s estimate. But she also said they failed to get any company to bid on the elevator package, estimated at $1,285,000

“Due to our best efforts in getting elevator folks to get bids in when we asked for them, that didn’t quite work out,” she said.

She said that portion of the Phase II will be bid again, with a due date of Nov. 19.

“Why do you anticipate we’ll get bids this time?” asked Commissioner Felix Schmiesing.

“We’re currently seeking comments from some of the suppliers to see what we can do to make it a little bit more interesting for them,” she said. “One company said the controls for the security components were more complicated than they expected, so they ran out of time to put their number together. We’re looking at modifying the specifications.”

“I’m convinced that once we’ve revisited the specs that we’ll have three or four bidders on that,” said Administrator Steve Taylor.

Everson said the bid package for Phase III, which includes the remainder of the project, should be ready for release Jan. 6.

The entire project cost estimate is $63 million.

New Sign
The board approved the purchase of a double-sided digital reader board at a cost not to exceed $34,000. The board will replace the current wooden Sherburne County Fair sign near the intersection of Joplin Street and Business Center
