Excitement was in the air at Clearview Elementary last week, with students spending the day being active during the school’s sixth annual walk-a-thon, raising over $15,000, with pledges still coming in.
Along with being the PTA’s major fundraiser each year, the purpose of the walk-a-thon is to promote healthy lifestyles through physical activity and food choices.
Throughout the day each grade, from preschool through fifth, took turns participating in the event. Along with walking, a snack station and other healthy activities were set up in the gym for the students to rotate through. Phy Ed teacher George Bienusa led the students through the activities. Parents were encouraged to attend and walk with their children.
“Like every year, the obstacle course was the fan favorite,” said PTA President Lori Johnson. “Even the amity interns got into it.”
To keep excitement high, random prize drawings were held daily from Sept. 21 to Oct. 5. Student names were entered into the drawings for each $10 raised and for each individual donor they had. With 60 prizes to choose from, many students’ names were entered multiple times, including Lila H., who had 20 individuals pledging money to the cause.
A pizza party will be held for the classroom that raises the most money once the final numbers are in.
All money raised from the walk-a-thon goes back to Clearview students for educational purposes including field trips, classroom needs, family fun nights, assemblies and other enrichment opportunities used to supplement the curriculum.
The PTA extended thanks to the teachers and staff for helping put on the event, the volunteers who helped plan and run events, and all the students and families that made an effort to help raise money for their school.
