Becker primary focuses on literacy as initiative

This year, Becker Primary School is once again focusing on student literacy.  One of the new initiatives this year is a knowledge building curriculum called Arts and Letters.  In first grade, this includes four modules that are taught across the school year.

The first selection is titled, “A World of Books” and includes a a focus on the essential question: Why are books important?

As part of the learning, students will engage with authentic texts to build on their existing knowledge of how people access books and experience the joy of reading. They will learn about how different people from around the world gain access to books such as packhorse librarians, bookmobiles and more.

The first grade team decided to kick off the learning with a visit from the Monticello based Rally to Read vehicle, an ambulance retrofitted to serve as a bookmobile.

Becker resident and retired teacher Cindy Graham (along with her husband, Mark, a retired Becker administrator) has spent countless hours using the mobile library to help spread her passion for literacy awareness.

Congratulations to the Becker Primary students and staff for their continued and renewed focus on student literacy!
