Becker High School Celebrates National Unity Day

National Unity Day was held in schools all over the country Oct. 24, to encourage students to stand up against bullying and hate.

While orange is the usual color worn during the anti-bullying campaign, the WeCare Club at BHS decided to design their own shirts with the slogan “Be Bigger than the Hate.”  The Club was able to sell the shirts for $5, thanks to local screening and printing companies selling the shirts for cost and printing them for free.

In addition to selling t-shirts, the WeCare Club set up a table in the commons where students could sign the Unity Pledge, take a picture in the photo booth, and get their fingernails painted orange.  It is important to  BHS students that everyone feels welcome at their school, and to send the message that all are going to stand up against discrimination and bullying of any kind.

The WeCare Club encourages everyone in the community to visit the “Not in our Town” website and take the pledge:  www.niot.org/take-pledge.

The pledge goes as follows:

“I pledge to stand up to all forms of hate, bigotry and bullying. I will not stay silent in the face of intolerance based on race, ethnicity, sexuality, gender, religion, ability or any other factor. I will work together with my neighbors to create safer, more inclusive communities for all.”
