Letters To The Editor

Living on the waters of the Briggs Lake Chain, I have witnessed lake conditions which suggest that, despite the best efforts of the Briggs Lake Chain Association (BLCA), our waters are in danger. Under the status quo, our lakes have been labeled “impaired,” the high water ordinance has kicked in three times in the last 12 months, and within the last month the DNR has verified the presence of Eurasian milfoil on Rush Lake.

The BLCA gets less than half the property owners to join as members, and a paltry 16% of property owners contribute to the spraying for curly leaf pondweed.

A lake improvement district (LID) can address ongoing and new threats to our lakes’ water quality. Unfortunately, it is easy to stick with the status quo, depending on a few volunteers to fight the good fight while the rest of us sit back.

To the property owners on the Briggs Lake Chain, I ask you to learn more about what a LID is before dismissing this proposal out of hand.

Visiting the BLCA website, talking to a board member, and attending one of the informational meetings are ways to learn more.
