The Becker Bulldog girls volleyball team celebrated their very successful season last Monday with a banquet at school where they handed out awards and named captains for next year.
Head Coach Kristina Sloan guided the team to a 24-5 record in her first year as head coach and her team made the section semi-finals before falling to Bemidji Nov. 4.
“These girls came in from day one with a mission and a work attitude to get the job done,” said Sloan. “They showed not only themselves, but fans what they were made of.”
Sloan talked big when she mentioned how her squad beat teams that were very strong and she was thrilled to see how her team responded so well in matches where they fell behind early only to battle back and take matches in five sets.
“Not only did I learn from them, but I hope they were able to learn from me,” said the humble coach.
The team MVP was given to Samantha Angell while the most improved player was freshman Jessica Gruber. Alexa Hanowski was named the defensive player of the year and Brynn Barthel and Daisy Kent were honored by being named 2016 captains.
The Bulldogs will be losing four prominent players to graduation including Angell, Hanowski, Kalie Jergens and Kalley Anderson. All four plan to continue playing the sport in college and Angell has already committed to going to school at St. Thomas.
“I look forward to 2016 and having a chance to work with these girls over the summer,” said Sloan. “I have some underclassmen that are looking strong and will take the role of our seniors.”
