Volleyball Team Celebrates Great 2014 Season

The Becker Bulldog girls volleyball team held their end-of-the-season banquet last Thursday evening in the high school cafeteria.

Awards were handed out after a pizza dinner and highlights of the season were discussed including a photo slideshow.  The Bulldogs finished the season with a 14-13 record and were bounced from the Section 8AAA playoffs last month by Big Lake.

This year, senior Sam Haugen and junior Sam Angell made the All Conference team, with Alexa Hanowski and Kalie Jergens earning All Conference Honorable mention.

The team’s MVP for the season was Haugen.  Most improved went to senior right side hitter Megan Albertson.  The defensive award went to junior  Alexa Hanowski.

Each girl on the varsity team earned All Conference Academic awards and the team as a whole earned the AVCA team academic award.

Highlights of the season include tough, but very competitive losses to Monticello and Rogers.  The girls played well after their opening day loss to Rogers in August when they won eight games and lost just five from Sept. 1 through the 15th. The team went on a three game win streak in early October when they beat Foley, Greenway and Hinckley-Finlayson to improve to 12-10.

“The girls stepped up to some very tough competition this year against some big schools,” said Head Coach Taylor Essen. “Our seniors were a dedicated group and their leadership and positive attitudes will be missed.”
