The Becker High School trap team sent five shooters to the MSHSL state tournament June 24, as one of 40 teams to qualify out of 343 in the state. “A great accomplishment for these student athletes,” said Coach Chris Keeler.
The squad consisted of Josiah Christensen, Evan Schmidt, McKenna Anderson, Carter Garding and Adam Golembeck.
The weather was a game changer at the event, as temps were cool for this time of the year and there was a strong wind blowing right in the shooter’s faces, causing the clay targets to fly very unpredictably.
Becker’s fivesome broke 422 out of 500 targets to take 31st place.
The top team on the day was St Michael-Albertville, who shattered 480 of 500 targets. Hibbing was second at 474 and Blaine was third at 470.
“I can't say enough how proud I am of this team and how they came together to reach this level,” said Keeler. “I also couldn't do it without the support of the Becker Schools, Dave Niemi, Jesse O'Neill, and the other coaches.”
Those “other coaches” include Gregg Hedtke, Tom Voigt, Jeff Schroeder, Eric Olson and Dan Tollefson.
“It was also humbling to receive the support and praise from the community at large,” he said. “We are well supported and on the right track to have a perpetually strong team in the Becker sports tradition.”
