The Becker Bulldog boys and girls track and field teams continued their trend of hosting early season time trials because of the fantastic fieldhouse facility that can house their running, jumping, throwing and vaulting competitions in a confined space.
Tuesday, Becker hosted Zimmerman, Rocori and Minnetonka.
The event was an opportunity to kick the season off in a scrimmage-type format and to stretch the athletes’ potential as well as their legs.
While the two time trials this week are not considered official meets, the competitions give the athletes a chance to try some events they are interested in and get some marks — whether it be times in running events or heights and distances in field events. It also gives the coaches a better idea of what kind of athletes they are working with and where these athletes will fit best in their lineup.
Boys Track
Some notable performances for the boys were the 4x800 team, which finished in first place with a time of 9:53.01. Members in this relay were Jonathan Novak, Olsen Pancoast, Luke Pappenfus and Luke Lahr.
Tanner Neidenfeuhr and Logan Gallus were neck and neck in the 55 high hurdles, finishing in 10.2 and 10.3 seconds. Both athletes are new to this event.
Becker’s 55 dash was led by Conner Huebner with a time of 6.97, followed by Kevin Andres (7.11) and Bhavin Bhakta (7.23).
The 4x200 team of Sydney Boros, Logan Anderson, Andrew Davalos and Andres also captured first with a time of 1:42.00.
Lahr blew away the competition in the 1600, finishing with a time of 4:58.9. Huebner again led the way in the 200, finishing with a time of 25.88 followed by Bhakta with a time of 26.0 and Colten Demant with a time of 26.8.
Luke Pappenfus ran a nice 800 with a time of 2:28, followed by Brett Parson with a time of 2:33. Davalos led the way in the 400 with a time of 58.6 followed by Sydney Boros and Neidenfeuhr with times of 59.2 and 59.06.
The final race of the night was the 4x400 meters was won by Becker with a time of 3:52.3. Members of that team included Boros, Lahr, Andres and Davalos.
The field events had some decent showings with Brady Sheeley going over 34 feet in the triple jump and James Nikolov winning the high jump at a height of 5'6".
Girls Track
Sprinters Hannah Schmidt, Miranda O'Brien and Shannon Sydow all had strong showings Thursday in the 55 meter dash.
In the hurdles, Becker had several girls working hard to master the technique. Haley Hubbard (returning runner) and Sam Angell (new to the team) both got their three steps between all the hurdles and had good times.
“Aubree Lahr looks to be getting her steps soon as well if her shin splints get better,” said Coach Trish Reimer-Kealy.
Becker’s distance girls are looking strong with Alli Hendrickson earning a personal record time (5:58) in the 1600. Lexi Dehmer, Jada Rositas, and Nikki O'Brien ran well also. The 800 meters saw a good effort from Tate Spinner, Hendrickson and Allie Garding.
Schmidt, Angell, Miranda O'Brien and Summer Somrock did well in the 200 meters.
In the field events, the girls see continued bright performances from Schmidt in the high jump (five feet) and pole vault (10 feet) — both events in which she did well at the state meet last year. Hubbard triple jumped 30'3" and Deedra Lawrence high jumped 4'10". Madi Kerzman earned a PR in the shot put (29'6).
“The relay teams all improved their handoffs since the first time trial and are always fun to watch,” said the coach. “It should be a fun season.”
The boys and girls competed Friday in the Granite Ridge indoor championship meet at 3 p.m., enjoy spring break and return to the track April 7 at Albany.
