#1 SINGLES PLAYER DAWSON BROWN stayed undefeated despite the fact the Bulldogs lost two matches to high quality teams in Duluth East and Benilde St. Margaret’s.

Tennis Team Improves To 11 3

The Becker boys tennis team went 3-2 this past week to improve their regular season record to 11-3. Becker 7, Cathedral 0. The Bulldogs swept all seven positions Thursday afternoon at St. Cloud Cathedral. Becker had especially good play from their #1 doubles team of Branden Roemer and Joe Gudim.  
 
“Their serving was excellent and their finishing of points was the best I’ve seen from them,” said Head Coach Hokan Bengtson. “Our #3 doubles team of (Johnny) Crocker and (Andrew) Schneider continues to improve. I was especially impressed by their footwork.”
 
Dawson Brown continued his dominance at #1 singles, pushing his record to 14-1 on the season.

Becker faced off against a quality Minneapolis Southwest team Tuesday and came away with a three point win.
 
“They are young only having two seniors on the team,” said Bengtson.  “Our singles players really played well. Josiah (Borst) continues to improve his game every day, he is really finishing his career as strong.  I was also impressed with our third doubles team. They are starting to really improve.

Becker 7, Buffalo 0
 
In a three-team tournament in Becker last Saturday, the Bulldogs split their two matches, winning handily in the first match over Buffalo in a shutout.
 
“Our first match was against Buffalo and they were undefeated in the Mississippi 8 Conference,” said Bengtson. “They will compete with STMA for the conference title.” 
 
The Bulldogs played well at all seven positions and are weekly showing signs of improvement. 
 
“I was really impressed with our play at #2 singles and #1 doubles,” said Bengtson.  “Josiah (Borst) is really coming into his own as a leader and top singles player in the area.”  
 
Becker’s 1st doubles score was 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 where  Branden (Roemer) and Austin (Hill) played well at times and began to attack and finish points better than I have seen them. It was really fun to see them finish well.”

Benilde SM 5, Becker 2
 
Becker’s match against Benilde-St. Margaret’s was a great battle as  the Red Knights are one of the top teams in the state, having beaten Wayzata and Edina this year.
 
“At #4 singles, (Josh) Duke played a great match and beat a quality player in a third set tiebreaker, 10-5,” said Bengtson.  “Dawson (Brown) won an epic duel between two really good players, winning the first set in a tie breaker, losing the second 5-7 and then — after being down 0-4 in the third set — won six straight games to clinch an amazing victory.”

Duluth East 5, Becker 2
 
Brown, Gudim and  Schneider were the only winners for Becker as the Duluth East Greyhounds handed Becker a rare loss last Friday on Becker’s courts.
 
“Duluth is a top quality team and are very well coached,” said Bengtson. “They improved a lot since last season and are going to be one of the top teams in their section as the season winds down.” 
 
Bengtson said he was really impressed with the finish and focus of his #3 doubles team of Andrew Schneider and Joe Gudim.
 
“They finished points and attacked well,” he said.
