The Becker Bulldog girls tennis team participated in team and individual section play last weekend at Fitness Evolution Center in Sartell.
Team Section Play
Becker faced Apollo/Cathedral and Monticello Friday afternoon and won both their matches. The Bulldogs knocked off Apollo/Cathedral 6-1 and did the same to Monticello.
Olivia Hultgren, playing at #1 singles, won both her matches as well as Kat Suckert (#2 singles) and Aundria Howard (#4 singles). The #2 doubles team of Ellie Tobako and Madison Anderson and the #3 doubles team of Shelby Huebert and Kayla Wilken also won bother their matches against the two teams.
Ashley Souba, playing #3 singles, lost to her Apollo opponent but beat her Monticello opponent to finish 1-1. The #1 doubles team of Rachel Lukkarila and Lindsey Lorette split their two matches, losing to Monticello’s Myranda Anderson and Taylor Arthur and beating their Apollo rivals.
Individual Section Play
For singles individuals play, Tabako played Tech's #1 Taylor Tarolley and was beaten 6-0, 6-0. Souba drew Willmar's #1 player and was also defeated 6-0, 6-0.
In doubles, Lorette and Lukkarila played an Apollo/Cathedral team and defeated them 6-0, 6-0 in the first round. In the second round, they played a Tech doubles team that went three sets, but Lorette and Lukkarilla eventually fell to the tough Tiger duo.
The other doubles team for Becker was comprised of Hultgren and Suckert and their first round pairing was a team from Sauk Rapids-Rice which they triumphed. Their second round match was against a Monticello doubles teams in which they also defeated, putting them in the advancement rounds to the section tournament. They then played the Tech team that defeated the Lorette/Lukkarila team and came away with the win to advance to the championship round against Tech's other doubles team.
The match was filled with great points, but the Becker team fell to the #1-seeded team. However, the Hultgren/Suckert team secured a number two seed in doubles tournament which will be played Saturday against a TRF team from the North sub-section.
For team play, Becker played a strong Bemidji team at 1:30 p.m Friday (full report on match in next week’s Citizen) and if they win, they'd play in the section final later to see who goes to state, most likely facing St. Cloud Tech. at 5 p.m.
