Swimmers down Hornets, fall to Bluejackets

The Becker Bulldog swimming and diving team pushed its season record to 4-3 last week with a win over Big Lake and a loss to Cambridge-Isanti.

In the win over Big Lake, the Bulldogs fell behind early but used the deficit as motivation to up their game and race to victory.

“Swimming against Big Lake is always fun and the school rivalry gives the girls the drive to win,” said Coach Tina Tamm.  “Big Lake took the lead after the first event and that’s all it took for our girls to get into game mode.”

First place finishes went to Morgan Schrader in the 200 free, Laila Cook in the 200 IM, Kadence Cox in the 100 free and Grace Wynia in the 100 Breaststroke.

“For the 3rd time this season, our breaststrokers finished 1-2-3,” added Tamm.

Cambridge-Isanti

In the team’s second match against the Bluejackets, the Bulldogs couldn’t repeat their winning ways from earlier in the season.

“We had beat them in our first meet against them this year,” said Tamm.  “As the season progresses every team continues to get better and they pulled ahead of us this time.”

Becker held the lead for most of the meet, but Cambridge-Isanti’s sprinters came through in the end for the win.

“This meet literally came down to the last event and I knew it was going to be close,” added Tamm. “We just didn’t have enough left to win that last relay to win the meet, leaving us with a three point loss.”

Becker will take its 4-3 record into the final three dual meets of the season before they compete at the Section meet.

Tamm is expecting the girls to continue to improve and plans to have her team ready for the sections.

“The girls work really hard to get a Section cut time and participate in that meet so it’s good to have that to end our season with,” said Tamm.  “It’s going to be a different experience at the Section meet this year, but we get to participate in it.”

The next meet for the Bulldogs was scheduled for home on October 1st versus Chisago Lakes.
