Piccolo Finishes In Tie For 37th At State

Becker senior golfer Cheyenne Piccolo shot an 87 Monday and an 87 Tuesday to finish tied for 37th at the Class AA State High School Golf Tournament at Ridges of Sand Creek in Jordan.

Day one was a humid, hot 92º day. To walk six miles on a very hilly course in that weather was a challenge, her head coach Steve Whittaker said.

“She is a very consistent player who never gives up,” he said. “Her last four rounds at sections and state have been 87’s and 85’s.”

Kate Smith of Detroit Lakes walked away with the state title by shooting a 68 Monday and a 69 Tuesday to finish two strokes ahead of runner-up Jenna Janu of Minnewaska.

Red Wing High School won the team state title with a combined score of 634.

“It is a real accomplishment for her (Cheyenne) to do so well in her first appearance at the state meet,” said Whittaker. “She is a great competitor and will be sorely missed next year as she has been a team staple for years.”
