Olympic Gold Medalist Coming To Becker

How do you get the best wrestler on the planet to run practice, prepare your team for a match and then personally coach the match as well?

You simply write a letter to him explaining what wrestling means to you.

That’s exactly what Bulldog freshman Colten Demant did when he entered a contest to bring Olympic gold medal winner and world champion Jordan Burroughs to Becker.

And he won.

Demant was one of thousands of entries submitted in the “I am a Wrestler” contest promoted by Flips Wrestling and Flips Headphones. The rules were to purchase a pair of Burrough’s limited edition gold headphones ($140), then write an essay in 100 words or less defining what “I am a Wrestler” means to him. Burroughs reviewed all the entries and selected Demants as the grand prize winner.

With that, Burroughs will show up and spend two days in Becker next week including helping coach wrestling practice at Becker High School Wednesday, then attend and sit on the bench of Thursday’s meet against Mora in the Becker High School gymnasium.

As part of the festivities, Burroughs will be signing autographs from 7-7:30 p.m. prior to the 8 p.m. wrestling match.

Burroughs said the following in an advertisement for the contest: “I am super-pumped about this contest,” he said. “I’ll come to your school and run a day-before-a-match practice, mentally prepare your team for the match and coach it all the way to the end. The FlipsWrestling guys will also throw in some added goodies, to commemorate the occasion.”

FlipsWrestling is a company formed by wrestlers for wrestlers. It markets and sells FlipAudio’s innovative headphones that transform into amplified speakers with a “flip” to the wrestling community, providing support to wrestlers and the wrestling community.

Burroughs is an American Olympic and world champion in freestyle wrestling. He grew up in New Jersey and attended Winslow Township High School where he won three district titles, two regional championships, and a state title in 2006 at 135 pounds.

In college at Nebraska, Burroughs went undefeated his junior and senior years and graduated with three Big 12 titles and two national championships, including winning the Hodge Trophy, which is wrestling's equivalent to the Heisman.

Burroughs continued his path to greatness, making his first Olympic team and winning a Olympic Gold medal in August 2012 in London. He has amassed an amazing 38-0 international record, and is currently still undefeated since 2009.

Fans of Burroughs and the Becker Bulldog wrestling team are invited to attend Thursday’s wrestling match against Mora to see Burroughs in action. He will be signing autographs before the match that starts at 8 p.m.
