Mathews paces girls golf team

Becker’s Layla Mathews is headed to the state golf meet after an impressive comeback and an intense fight to the finish at the Section 8AAA girls golf tournament.

Mathews entered day two of the tournament in 17th place, but fought her way back to place in the top five individuals.

“On day one, Alexa Voller came in first for our team and Avery Johnson was just behind her after shooting her best MSHSL round (with Mathews in third place),” Coach Anna Babler said.  “Layla was three strokes behind going into the final hole in the finals, but a player triple bogeyed her last hole, sending Layla and her into sudden death.”

In the playoff, both girls bogeyed the first two holes.

“On the third hole, Layla beat her with a par,” Babler said.  “It was pretty intense.  Layla had a tricky first day at Sections but really came around and fought hard for the win.”

Mathews will play in the MSHSL State Golf Meet at Bunker Hills on next Tuesday and Wednesday.

As a team, the Bulldogs finished in fifth place overall, 21 strokes off the lead.

In the final round, Mathews fired an 83 to place fifth, while Voller shot an 88 for 12th place overall.  Johnson was next for the Bulldogs with a 97, as she and Nora Pilarski tied for 30th.
